FONTIJN stands on historic ground, once a vital gathering spot around a life-giving fountain.
Nomadic Khoi groups, notably the Cochoqua and Gorachoqua, first relied on the fountain for their cattle. In the 18th century, it became a key stop for farmers and merchants traveling to Cape Town. A dam was built around the fountain, and pumpkins planted in its damp walls gave rise to the name Pampoenekraal.
By the 19th century, a settlement formed around a local church. In 1836, it was named after Cape Governor Sir Benjamin D'Urban, later renamed Durbanville to avoid confusion with Durban. The fountain remained the town’s primary water source until 1957, when the municipal system connected to Wemmershoek Dam.
