Homes by the sea

There’s little doubt that South Africans love to be by the seaside. Every year, especially around the New Year, we flock to the coast to enjoy our time by the sea.

The thing is, living by the sea isn’t just for those sunny December holidays. All year round, the small, picturesque towns of the East and West coast of South Africa attract people looking to experience the outdoors.

Whether you want to hike the Otter Trail along the Garden Route, see the flowers in winter around Paternoster and Lambert’s Bay, or enjoy some “winter” sunshine in Durban, there’s something for every season.

Time to get away

Most of us spend the majority of our time in the city – whether that’s commuting to and from work, in the office, or even living within the city limits. Not only do we live in very busy areas, but our leisure time is often taken up with events and occasions. The chance for actual downtime is few and far between.

Escaping to the coast, and away from the hubbub of everyday life, is something that appeals to all generations. Whether you’re a student, a full-time employee or someone looking to retire, the quiet, peaceful lifestyle of a coastal town draws us all in.

Recharge those batteries

The health benefits of being by the sea are well known, and it’s not just the lovely, fresh ocean breeze. Physical activities like walking or running on the beach, and swimming in the ocean are proven to be great ways to kickstart a full “city detox”. Relaxing on the beach soaking up some sunshine might seem lazy, but after spending the year cooped up in an office that injection of vitamin D is just what the doctor ordered.

While the physical benefits are obvious, it’s the less tangible ones that actually make the biggest difference. There is a priceless value to time spent exclusively with friends and family that simply can’t be quantified. Getting away to the coast gives you the chance to truly enjoy one another’s company, and reconnect.

Your options

We all have different needs, depending on the life-stage we are in, but buying a home by the sea can be a very prudent investment. Not only do you have the beach on your doorstep, picturesque views and a relaxed lifestyle, but there are also revenue opportunities to be had.

A Cape Town couple recently grabbed the chance to own their own piece of paradise, buying an apartment on Beach Road in Mouille Point. Trips to the promenade, local markets and the fresh sea air convinced them this was where they wanted to establish themselves in the future.

After buying the apartment, they renovated it and decided to try their hand at holiday rentals. Not only would this be a great way to pay off their bond, but also ensured the apartment was working for them while they were not staying there.

The results have been astounding. In their first month online they managed to easily cover their bond. Midway through their second month, and they are on track to earn double the first month.

Taking the right steps

While buying an apartment might not be to everyone’s liking, there are some great opportunities all along the South African coastline - whether you’re looking for a “one street” town, or an established metro. If you’re looking to save some money off the initial purchase you should consider buying off-plan.

Buying off plan means you buy the home before, or during, or right after the actual build phase. You remove extra costs like transfer duties and agent fees, while some builds also give you the chance to choose certain fixtures and fittings.
Developments are great for people looking to downsize or retire by the sea. Added security, amenities and general upkeep resources are an added plus to those looking to enter a more relaxing phase of their lives.

When planning your next trip to the coast, why not take a few extra minutes to see what’s for sale in that area. You never know, you might find your very own piece of coastline
