We are constantly drawn to, and even overwhelmed by, the sheer brilliance of science and design and pause to think back to the beginning of 2014, when the Mother City was given the status of Design Capital of the World. Nearly 4000 articles were published about the year-long event which generated R1.6 billion in digital media coverage and reached 2.4 billion people. Design was finally back on the agenda – but was it worth the R60 million budget allocation? Read more page 57. In our ever popular residential reviews, we turn the attention on Croydon Olive in the heart of the Western Cape which has managed to impeccably balance the science of an operational olive farm with idyllic residential living. Similarly, developers at Dunkirk Estate on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast have really pushed the boundaries of architectural design whilst retaining an environmentally sustainable footprint.
